Last week I was on meetup “The Future is Robotics” in San Francisco. Robotics is the trending topic in Silicon Valley. Currently we are also experiencing a hardware renaissance as it called by NYT.
Robotics is a very complex topic it is more about software rather than hardware now.
Obviously, industry have a lot of room in hardware improvement, we are just on very beginning of it. But there are robots that needs your software. Just take a look at Willow Garage’s PR2 and Robot App Store.
Software and algorithms delivers real value from the world of machines. Without software all robots becomes just a piece of metal, silicon and cables. It is all similar to iOS ecosystem, iPhone means a lot only with App Store, and means nothing without it.
We should be prepared to develop apps for robots in the near future. But never forget Three Laws of Robotics from Issac Asimov:
- A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
- A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
- A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
And we will found ourselves in the peaceful world populated by people and robots.
This topic is emerging now and more events and things around robotics and hardware startups on talks is now.
